SCOM 2012 – Side-by-Side installation with SCOM 2007 R2

March 5, 2012

I got a question about monitoring servers with SCOM 2012 while there was already a SCOM 2007 R2 active and if this can be done. Well yes it can. The two installations can run next to each other and you can multi-home the agents so they report to both environments. There is one thing to keep in mind:

As is it not possible to have an SCOM 2007 R2 agent talk to a SCOM 2012 environment but the SCOM 2012 Agent can talk to SCOM 2007 R2 an upgrade is required. This is pretty straight forward. As we can see in the screen below the SCOM 2007 R2 agent is installed on the client:

Now when we push te Agent from SCOM 2012 it will automaticly be upgraded:

We can see (configuration screen – Operations Manager) that the agent is automaticly configured for two management groups (multi-homing):

The agent will be unable to report to the SCOM 2007 R2 management group during the installation.
The client will show up under agent managed computers soon and will still be visible in the SCOM 2007 R2 Management group.

NOTE: if you do not have the option to push the SCOM 2012 agent you can do a manual installation. The existing management group configuration will remain in place and you need to add the SCOM 2012 management group manually.
