SCOM 2012 – Can i connect Management Groups from previous versions?

March 5, 2012

With the new Operations Manager 2012 comming soon some may wonder if it is possible to connect Management Groups from previous versions.

Unfortunately the answer is NO.

For SCOM 2007 and 2007 R2 this isn’t supported by MS. The documentation on SCOM 2012 says the same, no support. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh230698.aspx which states: “Both management groups must be running the same build of Operations Manager. For example, both management groups must be running System Center 2012 – Operations Manager.”

Of course i want to see for myself so i prepared a SCOM 2007 R2 MG en a SCOM 2012 MG in a test environment. When i try to make a connection from the SCOM 2012 to the SCOM 2007 R2 an error is presented:
